South Africans might encounter another rise in fuel prices come September, as suggested by the latest figures from the Central Energy Fund. The anticipated adjustments point to increased costs for petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin.
The projected hike could see 93 petrol rising by about 83 cents per litre, while 95 petrol might increase by 94 cents. Diesel shows a steeper climb, with potential increases reaching around R2.87 per litre for 0.05% diesel and R3.07 for 0.005% diesel. Additionally, illuminating paraffin may go up by roughly R2.24 per litre.
This potential surge in diesel prices is particularly concerning due to its extensive use in sectors like freight, agriculture, construction, and mining. A significant increase could escalate transportation and operational expenses, consequently exerting upward pressure on food and consumer prices.
Although the outlook has somewhat improved since early August—when petrol was expected to see a rise nearing R1 per litre and diesel increases of almost R5 per litre—the current data indicates that fuel costs continue to face substantial upward pressures. International oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate remain pivotal in determining South Africa’s monthly fuel price adjustments. While a relatively stable rand has offered some relief, higher global petroleum prices persist in contributing to fuel under-recoveries.
The figures provided by the Central Energy Fund are indicative and may fluctuate before the final announcement. The new fuel prices are scheduled to be implemented on 1 September 2026.
