Jingye, a Chinese steel manufacturer, has formally filed for compensation from the UK government after the nationalisation of British Steel’s plant in Scunthorpe. This move comes under a bilateral investment treaty between the UK and China, following unsuccessful negotiations over financial settlement terms. Industry insiders suggest the compensation claim could surpass £1 billion.
The root of the conflict lies in the UK government’s decision to nationalize British Steel on the grounds of national security, emphasizing the need to secure domestic steel production capabilities. This intervention was prompted by fears of potential plant closure and significant job losses. Jingye, which acquired British Steel in 2020, had previously contemplated shutting down operations due to financial challenges and a global steel market oversupply. However, the UK’s decision shifted asset control to the state, averting the closure.
Jingye contends it deserves compensation for the losses and investments it made following its acquisition of British Steel. The UK government, on the other hand, argues that its intervention was vital to safeguard strategic industrial capacity and maintain employment.
