In a remarkable turn of events, SK Eternix, the renewable energy unit of South Korea’s SK Group, has experienced an impressive surge in its stock price, climbing over 114% in the past month. This sharp increase is largely attributed to investor confidence that the burgeoning development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure will lead to a heightened demand for renewable energy sources. On Friday, the company’s shares closed at 80,900 won, equivalent to approximately US$55.35, reflecting a 114.6% rise compared to a month ago. In contrast, the Kospi index saw a decline of 20.9%, and SK hynix, SK Group’s leading semiconductor company, witnessed a drop of 31.2% over the same period.
The company’s upward momentum has intensified in recent days, with SK Eternix stock jumping 44.9% over the last five trading sessions alone. Institutional investors have played a significant role, purchasing a net 106.8 billion won worth of shares, alongside foreign investors who acquired a net 79 billion won. Analysts are attributing this bullish performance to the anticipated long-term demand for renewable power, fueled by AI data centers that consume substantial amounts of electricity. Additionally, the South Korean government’s initiatives to bolster clean energy capacity have further reinforced investor sentiment.
In a bid to address the anticipated demand, South Korea’s government has forecasted that major industrial developments, including AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing hubs, will necessitate an additional 39.7 gigawatts of electricity. This projection aligns with the government’s ambitious target to expand the nation’s renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by the year 2030, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainable growth.
SK Eternix’s promising trajectory in the clean energy sector is further underpinned by its planned partnership with global private equity firm KKR, valued at 2 trillion won. This joint venture is expected to accelerate the company’s expansion in the renewable energy domain, bolstering its position as a key player in the industry. The robust investor confidence, buoyed by these strategic initiatives and the government’s supportive policies, reflects a shared optimism for a future where renewable energy plays a central role in powering AI and other tech-driven advancements.
